Record £816 million investment in health research announced

Researcher in labThis week NHS research has received an unprecedented boost following a government announcement that funding totaling £816 million will be invested into the area. This is the largest investment ever to be made into UK health research.

Funding will be spread over the next five years and will benefit multiple projects including mental health, dementia and antimicrobial resistance.

Barts Health NHS Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are amongst the 20 biomedical research centres across the country that will benefit directly from the new funding.

These four centres will each receive a share of over £170 million in additional funding, as broken down below:

  • Barts Health NHS Trust – £6,557,380
  • Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust – £37,005,790
  • Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – £19,075,000
  • University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – £111,503,317

This additional funding will enable these centres to host the development of new, ground-breaking treatments, diagnostics and prevention across a wide range of diseases.

Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt said: “We are supporting the great minds of the NHS to push the frontiers of medical science so that patients in this country continue to benefit from the very latest treatments and the highest standards of care.”
