Invention: developing clinical innovations with member trusts
The ideas that transform patient care already exist inside your trust. UCLPartners helps frontline innovators turn them into real solutions.
NHS clinicians and frontline staff see problems that need solving every day, and many have the ideas to solve them.
Many of these ideas never go anywhere, not for lack of merit, but for lack of time, commercial knowledge and the support needed to navigate a complex system. Our Invention service aims to change that. Working with staff across our member trusts, we provide the knowledge, tools and infrastructure to turn clinical insight into viable, scalable innovations.
Who this is for
All staff working within Barts Health, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital, Royal Free London and University College London Hospitals.
The service is relevant to all employees with a practical problem to solve and an idea worth developing, including clinical, operational and administrative colleagues.

How it works
Join the conversation
Attend one of our events to start your invention journey. At these events, we encourage you to identify the everyday problems faced in the workplace and explore how to turn them into implementable solutions. You can also join our Innovator Community for information on upcoming events, opportunities for learning and collaboration and other ways to get involved.
Share your ideas
Our team works with you to clearly articulate your specific problem, ensuring any solution addresses a genuine, validated need.
Innovation development
Through our health innovator training we work with you to refine the design of your solution. We then apply engineering approaches and innovation methodology, developing your solution so that its ready to be tested, evaluated and refined in real world settings.
Commercial development
Drawing on our in-house expertise and world-leading ecosystem, we combine venture building with tech transfer to transform the strongest ideas into viable products and services—developing, protecting and commercialising innovations, securing investment, and building companies.
Removing friction
We scale solutions across our network of NHS trusts. We do this by reducing the barriers that slow innovation down within the NHS, from policy navigation to piloting, to innovation passporting, creating the conditions for good ideas to move.
