Partnership trusts scoop 2017 NHS Digital Pioneer Awards

28 February 2017

UCLPartners is delighted to announce that the three winners of the 2017 NHS Digital Pioneer Awards are representatives from across the partnership region. These inaugural awards – sponsored by DigitalHealth.London and supported by NHS England, London’s three Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs), and MedCity – were presented at a special ceremony last week, as part of the DigitalHealth.London/collaborate event.

Over 120 NHS leaders from across London’s health ecosystem were present to hear Juliet Bauer, Director of Digital Experience at NHS England, present the winning individuals and teams with trophies and certificates, as she praised their leadership and forward-thinking approach to driving innovation and sustainability within their NHS organisations.

The winners are:

Award for Digital Innovation

‘MyMind’ app project team, NELFT NHS Foundation Trust
The MyMind app has been co-designed by young people and clinicians alongside NELFT’s in-house IT team. Offering preventative support and improved communication for children and young people suffering with mental health conditions, the functionality of the MyMind app enables young service users to complete their own outcome measures and instant message with clinicians, all whilst automatically updating the electronic patient record.

Award for Digital Leadership

Sarah Newcombe, Clinical Site Practitioner, Great Ormond Street Hospital
Sarah led the implementation of a clinical communication tool to aid prompt recognition of deteriorating children and enabling trust-wide visibility of all patients. Judges were impressed by Sarah’s commitment to prioritising colleague engagement and supporting staff to adopt this technology, as well as her determination and passion to improve the recognition and response to deteriorating children in her care.

Award for Sustainability through Digital

Stephanie Mansell, Consultant Physiotherapist, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust
Stephanie was instrumental in introducing the application of modem technology as standard care for patients receiving non-invasive ventilation (NIV) at home. Her forward-thinking has ensured that the Trust is delivering optimal therapy for patients. As a result, the Trust has been able to offer more remote problem solving, reducing the need for outpatient appointments, increasing efficiency and improving patient experience.

Yinka Makinde, Programme Director at DigitalHealth.London, commented:

“There is some incredible work within the digital health space taking place across London’s NHS to transform outcomes and to benefit staff and patients. DigitalHealth.London is delighted to recognise the intrapreneurship, courage and forward-thinking ways of the dedicated individuals and teams leading this through the NHS Digital Pioneer Awards, as supported by NHS England.”

The DigitalHealth.London/collaborate event, titled ‘Why tomorrow’s patient needs a digital NHS’, aimed to inform and stimulate NHS leaders’ thinking on topical issues relating to digital transformation. Sessions included a workshop on Hacking STPs: digitally enabling Sustainability and Transformation Plans; a digital participation panel featuring a range of patient representatives; an inspiring talk from Dr Keith Grimes about the practical application of virtual reality in patient care; and The Great Debate: Artificial intelligence – enabling less contact with healthcare professionals?
