UCLPartners to deliver new training in dementia care leadership and quality improvement

21 September 2017

This month we’re delighted to announce the launch of our new ‘Dementia care leadership and quality improvement’ course; a five-day training course for Band 6 and above NHS staff and care home managers, which will deliver specialised training to help participants implement change to improve care for people with dementia using quality improvement (QI) methodology.

Corresponding with World Alzheimer’s month, the launch of this new training will aim to build on the successful dementia awareness training delivered across north, central and east London since 2012, which has seen nearly 60,000 people trained to date.

By introducing Tier 3 level training, it is our ambition to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of those leading dementia care by creating a network of 40 health and social care professionals from a variety of organisations across the region using QI. Our focus on training care home managers is a unique opportunity to empower a group of professionals who are able to implement change at an often overlooked area in service delivery. In 2007, the Alzheimer’s Society highlighted that many homes are still not providing the level of person centred care people with dementia deserve.

Running from September 2017 to February 2018, two cohorts will attend a five-day leadership programme to develop a deeper understanding of best practice around effective communication and care of people with dementia. An important element of this will be training in quality improvement methodology and how this can be used by participants to implement and manage change in their own organisation. Each participant will establish and lead their own quality improvement project following the end of the training, with on-going support from UCLPartners and Dementia Trainers.
