Our AHSC vision and goals

UCLPartners AHSC (Academic Health Science Centre) drives the translation of innovative research into patient benefit. We align the objectives, infrastructure and resources of 8 world-class organisations to act as an innovation pipeline to our NHS partners. We identify transformational innovations in health care at an early-stage, and support them with specialist expertise, training and seed funds, to speed-up clinical development and maximize benefit to our patients and NHS partners.

We work collaboratively across UCLPartners to enable the evaluation and wider uptake of innovations for the benefit of the population.

Our goals are to:

Build an innovation pipeline to address unmet need

We bring together experts from multiple research disciplines, professions and organisations to focus on the most pressing health challenges for our population. We focus on identifying ‘at risk’ patients and developing prevention strategies. Where we cannot prevent, we diagnose earlier drawing on our strengths in imaging, informatics and AI. We seek out novel therapies, and horizon-scan for transformational innovations, so that we can support them to be ‘NHS-ready’ and to improve health outcomes for patients.

Maximise data interoperability

Working across our four NIHR Biomedical Research Centres and with Health Data Research UK and the OneLondon Local Health Care Record Exemplar (LHCRE), we develop increasingly well-characterized cohorts that are underpinned by genomics, and support novel trial methodologies.

Increase economic impact:

We provide clear routes to commercialisation, working closely with our industry partners at the earliest stages, with the ARC North Thames to evaluate impact, and the AHSN and Accelerated Access Collaborative to scale innovations with positive outcomes. We work with our technology transfer offices, UCLBusiness and QM Innovations to support our spinouts, and with MedCity to promote London’s life science cluster.

Address the skills gap

We build workforce capacity in translation, data science, industry awareness and resilience; supporting joint appointments and secondments with partner organisations, including with industry and across our national networks.
