Our priority areas for products and services

Our priority areas for products and services focus on those we believe can have the greatest impact on patient care, align with local system priorities and improve population health

We are focusing our support on those areas that we believe can have the greatest impact on patient care, align with the priorities of our local health systems and help us achieve our vision of improving the health of our population. While we are interested in hearing from companies across a range of healthcare areas, we are particularly keen on products that meet needs in the following areas:

  • Mental health
  • Cardiovascular disease prevention
  • Patient safety
  • Population health management
  • Information sharing
  • Patient self-care

The development of these priorities has been informed by engagement with our local NHS organisations and health and care partnerships (HCPs), a survey of local research and innovation needs in the NHS, and alignment with the NHS Long Term Plan.

Mental health

Mental health was identified as the top priority for research and innovation in a recent survey of NHS clinicians and managers both nationally and within the UCLPartners region.

We are aware of the need for technological innovation in the following areas:

  • Mental health of children and young people
  • Mental health of children and young people with long-term physical conditions
  • Mental health first aid in the workplace
  • Mental health of young people on CAHMS waiting lists
  • Mental health of university students
  • Mental health and eating disorders
  • Body image and mental health
  • Assistive technology for autism
  • Supporting collaboration for multidisciplinary teams across health, education, social care and the voluntary sector to ensure holistic delivery of care to promote young people’s mental health and wellbeing
  • Promotion of good mental health across the whole life course
  • Prevention and treatment of mental ill health across the whole life course

Cardiovascular Disease prevention

We are committed to progressing its Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) prevention programme to drive large scale prevention of heart attacks, strokes and other circulatory problems.

We are aware of the need for technological innovation in the following areas:

  • Optimising the detection and management of atrial fibrillation
  • Optimising the detection and management of high cholesterol
  • Optimising the detection and management of high blood pressure
  • Personalised approaches to CVD prevention
  • Digital health technology such as wearables, wireless mobile devices, and artificial intelligence solutions to support detection and management of risk factors for CVD
  • Data and analytic solutions to support quality improvement in CVD prevention in primary care

Patient safety

Continuous improvements in patient safety require changes in the way healthcare is designed – from pathways of care to new technologies – to reduce the risk of harm to patients.

We are aware of the need for technological innovation in the following areas:

  • Improving the identification and management of patient deterioration across all health and care settings
  • Improving safety in maternal and neonatal care
  • Improving safety in elective and non-elective surgery
  • Developing a positive culture of patient safety with safety aware behaviours across all health and care settings
  • Improving medicines safety, particularly in non-acute settings

This is an emerging list of areas, which will continue to be refined to reflect national priorities and local areas of need

Example-RespiraSense

RespiraSense is a wearable device that enables the accurate and continuous monitoring of a patient’s respiratory rate – a challenge reflected in our interactions with hospital teams and in national efforts to drive standardised use of NEWS2, of which respiratory rate is a core component. UCLPartners is supporting frontline teams to test and implement the device, to understand how it can work in a real-world context and quantify the benefits it can have on the quality and safety of care.

Population health management

As one of the key pillars of the NHS Long Term Plan, improving population health is a focus for all HCPs. We are particularly interested in hearing from companies that provide tools to better understand population health and its impact within a health economy.

Information sharing

Digital is one of UCLPartners’ strategic priority areas, and we know that our NHS stakeholders see great potential in using digital technologies to improve communications and data sharing. We are particularly interested in hearing from companies that provide digital solutions to improving clinician-to-clinician communication and information sharing.

Patient self-care

People have a key role in protecting their own health, choosing appropriate treatments and managing long-term conditions. The NHS Long Term Plan calls for a ‘fundamental shift in the way that the NHS works alongside patients and individuals’. We’re particularly interested in hearing from companies with:

  • Patient self-care tools and technologies
  • Remote patient management solutions within the domains of community & mental health
