Cardiovascular disease: AHSC programme

Our AHSC (Academic Health Science Centre) cardiovascular programme is focussed on developing innovative approaches to prevent heart disease and creating new medicines and devices that will benefit patients.

This programme compliments the AHSN focus on improving the cardiac health of our patient population through partnerships that make a real difference in population and place-based care.

  • Barts Heart Centre (BHC): A single Centre dedicated to Cardiovascular research, care and education, created when QMUL and UCL cardiology, the Heart Hospital and London Chest Hospital, joined forces to produce a combined clinical and academic centre focussed on treating the whole CV pathway.
  • NIHR Barts Biomedical Research Centre: The BRC emphasises world-leading translational genomics relating to inherited common and rare disorders, and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic cardiovascular devices and innovative trials.
  • UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science: Founded in 2011, the Institute aims to be a world-class centre of excellence in pioneering novel, integrative strategies in preventative and therapeutic cardiovascular medicine.
