Cardiovascular disease is highlighted in the NHS Long Term Plan as the single biggest area where the NHS can save lives. Our new Blood Pressure Optimisation programme aims to transform the prevention of heart attacks, strokes and dementia.

Our AHSC (Academic Health Science Centre) cardiovascular programme is focussed on developing innovative approaches to prevent heart disease and creating new medicines and devices that will benefit patients.

We helped showcase and share learnings from three projects in our population which focused on tackling inequalities in cardiovascular disease as part of the NHS England’s Innovation for Healthcare Inequalities Programme.

We are working to prevent Atrial Fibrillation (AF) related strokes and associated mortality and morbidity by supporting clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) to improve care pathways for people with AF.

UCLPartners is working with NHS Trusts and primary care services across our geography to improve the offer to people with known or previously unknown high risk of cardiovascular disease, to ensure their blood cholesterol levels are understood and that the patient receives the appropriate treatment along the pathway.

We are working with secondary care organisations on cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention strategies for both staff and patients supporting the NHS Long Term Plan and the NHS People Plan.

Since 2017, we have been working closely with the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR) to support the National Cardiac Audit Programme (NCAP).

We are working with patients and carers to understand their experiences of being tested and treated for high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and high cholesterol, and to understand how testing and treating can be improved in the primary care setting.

Our Size of the Prize resources show how we could prevent heart attacks and stroke at scale by optimising treatment of two major risk factors - blood pressure and cholesterol. These resources have been developed using ICB-level data.
