New CVD Academy to tackle premature deaths related to cardiovascular disease

4 September 2023
The UCLPartners CVD Academy will equip colleagues from across our region with the skills to lead implementation of innovation projects that aim to reduce deaths related to Cardiovascular Disease (CVD).

CVD accounts for a quarter of all deaths in the UK and is one of the leading causes of deaths in our region. It is a major driver of health inequalities: if you live in England’s most deprived areas, you are almost four times more likely to die prematurely from CVD than someone in the least deprived areas. The CVD Academy, co-designed with patients, will be a multi-professional programme for primary care clinical colleagues (GPs, Nurses, Pharmacists) working in North Central London, North-East London and Mid & South Essex with the aim of:

  • Equipping attendees with the knowledge and skills to lead implementation of innovation projects to reduce deaths from heart attacks and strokes.
  • Building a network of professionals who can learn from one another, share best practice and collectively problem-solve.
  • Developing a group of experts who can help shape and lead CVD related innovations of the future.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the biggest challenges in our population, but it is also very preventable, through behaviour change and lifestyle measures and by optimising the treatment of high-risk conditions that cause cardiovascular disease.

Dr Matt Kearney

This free, year-long programme – funded by a grant from Daiichi Sankyo Ltd – will include a combination of group coaching sessions, regular community of practice meetings and webinars covering clinical and non-clinical information to develop knowledge and provide a practical focus on implementing transformational projects within primary care.   We encourage applications from clinicians who are passionate about reducing cardiovascular disease and are eager to lead change.

UCLPartners Executive Clinical Director for Cardiovascular Health, Dr Matt Kearney said:As a health innovation partnership our mission is to help the five million people in our region live longer healthier lives. Cardiovascular disease is one of the biggest challenges in our population, but it is also very preventable, through behaviour change and lifestyle measures and by optimising the treatment of high-risk conditions that cause cardiovascular disease.  The CVD Academy is designed to help colleagues from across our region to make sure they have the right skills and know-how to effectively manage these conditions.  This is a great opportunity and I would encourage our primary care colleagues with an interest in CVD prevention to apply for the CVD Academy and help us work together to make a real difference for our population.“

Participants would be expected to commit a minimum of four to five hours per month to the programme.
