The Topol Review: Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future

11 February 2019

The Topol Review, launched today (Monday 11 February) outlines how education and training for NHS staff now can deliver a better future for patients and the staff who care for them by implementing technologies such as genomics, digital medicine, artificial intelligence and robotics at a faster pace and on a greater scale than anywhere else in the world.

The report recommendations include:

  • Making sure patients and staff have a greater say in how digital technologies can be used in the future
  • Ensuring genomics and data analytics play major roles in undergraduate healthcare courses
  • Offering training to staff to build their digital readiness

In a new blog, Dr Charlie Davie reflects on the application of ‘big data’ and AI in healthcare. He considers some of the workforce challenges that AI can help to address and highlights the need to engage and educate the whole of the NHS workforce, empowering staff to make effective use of technology.
