Using AI to improve dementia diagnosis and support

We brought together NHS organisations, researchers and Punto Health to test tools designed to improve care for people with dementia.
The challenge
Dementia affects around one million people in the UK. For many people, getting a diagnosis can take too long, and support after diagnosis can be limited. Clinicians also often lack the tools needed to monitor patients and coordinate care.
What we did
We brought together NHS organisations, researchers and innovator Punto Health to test a suite of AI-enabled tools designed to improve dementia diagnosis, monitoring and support.
These include PuntoTest, a speech-based cognitive assessment tool to identify cognitive decline earlier, PuntoClinic, a dashboard for clinicians to monitor patients remotely and coordinate care, and PuntoCare, a personalised support platform for people living with dementia and their carers.
We played a central role in developing, delivering and funding the programme, brokering partnerships between Punto Health, Enfield Memory Service, North London NHS Foundation Trust, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and academic partners.
We helped deliver a 10-week NHS pilot, bringing together clinical and system partners, co-designing the pilot, redesigning the pathway and supporting governance approvals.
Impact
The pilot enabled the technology to be tested in routine clinical services, shaped around the needs of patients, carers and clinicians.
The findings from the 10-week pilot provided a strong evidence base for two follow-on NIHR-funded pilots rolled out across North and South London to further validate Punto’s solutions.
We are now leading the patient and public involvement, clinical engagement and health economics work for the NIHR funded pilots and will use those findings to support the development of a follow-on multi-site trial.
