Unlocking the power of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare

13 January 2025 |
The future of healthcare lies in embracing innovation with purpose, and AI offers a pathway for this. Explore the opportunities in unlocking the power of AI in healthcare, by Ilias Zapantis, Director at UCLPartners.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has woven itself into the fabric of our daily lives, shaping how we work, communicate, and make decisions. From AI assistants that book trips based on preferences, to tools like ChatGPT summarising lengthy emails or generating creative content, its influence is undeniable. Yet, one of its greatest promises lies in transforming healthcare, a sector where its potential impact could save lives, improve efficiency, and reshape patient experience.

The government announced plans to make the UK a leader in the AI sector, publishing its AI Opportunities Action Plan outlining how AI will boost productivity and improve people’s lives. In healthcare, this move is expected to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline patient management, and improve overall service efficiency.

In addition to the government’s shift to AI first, Lord Darzi’s review of the NHS, highlights the need for innovative solutions to address growing operational and efficiency challenges. Amid these challenges, digital and emerging technologies, particularly AI, remain a largely untapped opportunity to create a resilient, future-ready health system.

At its core, AI involves systems that mimic human intelligence to solve problems, learn from data, and adapt to new challenges. In healthcare, these capabilities are already transforming early disease detection, treatment planning, and operational efficiency. AI-driven tools like natural language processing support clinicians by summarising medical records, while image recognition models are aiding in medical scans analysis to identify conditions like cancer at an early stage, enabling timely interventions.

AI offers a remarkable opportunity to reshape the way we deliver health and care, addressing inefficiencies, improving outcomes, and empowering healthcare professionals. The possibilities are vast, but so are the challenges.

Balancing potential and practicality

The journey to integrate AI into healthcare is not without its hurdles. While AI holds the promise of driving innovation, the reality of implementing it within the NHS—one of the world’s most complex health systems—is nuanced. Fragmented infrastructure, data quality concerns, and regulatory challenges often create barriers to adoption. The system’s inherent heterogeneity makes interoperability a persistent challenge, with AI tools struggling to integrate across diverse platforms.

Deploying AI responsibly requires more than just introducing new technologies. It demands:

  • Clear alignment with priorities: AI solutions must address clinical and operational challenges and goals without adding unnecessary complexity.
  • Robust research and evaluation: Evidence of AI’s performance and safety in real-world settings is critical to mitigate risks and ensure effectiveness.
  • Upskilling the workforce: Clinicians and staff need the knowledge and confidence to implement and use AI effectively.

AI in healthcare can be truly transformative yet must be approached with careful consideration and meticulous planning. One significant concern is the risk of exacerbating existing disparities or unintentionally introducing new ones. To avoid this, healthcare leaders must engage and work with their stakeholders—patients, clinicians, and system leaders alike. Solutions should be co-designed to address well-understood problems, with clear implementation plans that account for the entire care pathway. The NHS operates on the frontlines of global healthcare, and it must balance short-term efficiency gains with long-term transformation goals.

UCLPartners’ role in supporting AI implementation

As a leading health innovation organisation, we are working collaboratively with healthcare systems, academic institutions, and industry experts to unlock the full potential of AI.

Our focus isn’t merely on deploying cutting-edge technologies; it’s about asking the right questions:

  • What problem are we solving?
  • How can AI align with our clinical and operational needs?
  • How do we ensure its safety, equity, and financial sustainability?

We are helping health systems navigate these complexities by fostering collaboration, from early innovation to building robust implementation strategies to create an ecosystem to deliver tangible, measurable value to patients and providers alike.

In collaboration with NHS North East London and Health Navigator (HN), we launched a new initiative using AI and personalised clinical coaching to identify patients at high risk of requiring unplanned emergency care, enabling the provision of personalised and preventative support.

Our animation: Understanding AI in healthcare

To empower healthcare professionals and demystify AI, we have produced an animation which gives an overview of AI, its current applications in healthcare and the challenges it presents. With AI evolving rapidly, the animation is designed as a short guide introducing this complex landscape, supporting organisations separate the noise from actionable opportunities.

What’s next?

In the coming months, we will be further sharing how we are supporting our system partners to fully understand and leverage the transformative potential of AI.

We will share our findings from a comprehensive analysis of AI adoption across London’s healthcare system, conducted in collaboration with The Health Foundation. By engaging with healthcare leaders across primary and secondary care, we have gathered critical insights into the challenges, opportunities, and best practices influencing the future of AI.

We are also in the process of developing a follow-up animation that will explore AI’s transformative role in shaping future health systems to be more participatory, proactive, and preventative, laying the groundwork for a more resilient and patient-centred healthcare ecosystem.

The future of healthcare lies in embracing innovation with purpose. AI offers a pathway to addressing the NHS’s most pressing challenges, but success will require more than just acquiring new technologies. Health systems must adapt to the profound changes AI brings, rethinking their structures, processes and strategies to build a resilient NHS for generations to come.

Together, with the support of leaders, healthcare organisations, and partnerships like UCLPartners, we can ensure we don’t just adopt AI, but create transformation that drives a step change toward a healthier, more equitable future for all.
