Accelerating out-of-hospital care through technology-enabled urgent community response

The NHS faces immense pressure to meet the needs of today, while also tackling the long-term challenge of creating a healthcare system that is more sustainable, using digital and community based solutions.

Urgent community response workshop

On 23 January 2025 we held a workshop bringing together key players from across the healthcare system to explore this dual challenge.

The workshop aimed to:

  • Establish a shared ambition for the future of Urgent Community Response (UCR)
  • Agree top challenges
  • Identify potential solutions
  • Understand what is needed to implement solutions.

You can catch up on the session by viewing the slides.

These include the six ambitions that have been identified to promote integrated system and regional working for UCR, as well as the proposed UCR priorities for 2025/6.

North Central London case study

Doc Abode is an innovative NHS workforce scheduling platform designed to optimise Urgent Community Response (UCR) staff deployment. From its implementation in North Central London between Sept 2022 and October 2023, Doc Abode demonstrated significant results:

  • Increased productivity with more patient visits per shift
  • Enhanced UCR service capacity with more patient contacts
  • Reduced costs – lower bank staff expenditure and reduced reliance on agency staff
  • Improved staff satisfaction – enhanced working conditions and staff safety.

Chris Garner, Associate Director for Community Service Development at NHS North Central London ICB, stated:

Doc Abode is the highest ROI investment the CSR (Community Services Review) has made in 3 years, with a potential in-year ROI.

See more information and evidence from this case study here.

Based on UCLPartners ROI modelling, even a modest 30% increase in productivity enabled by Doc Abode across the London Region UCR Providers could:

  • Support 89,034 additional urgent care contacts
  • Help release 146,212 occupied bed days
  • Save over £76.3 million per year.
