Professor Steve Thornton

Interim Managing Director

Professor Steve Thornton is Interim Managing Director for UCLPartners.

Steve has been a member of the Board of UCLPartners since 2016 in his role as Vice Principal (Health) at Barts and the London, Queen Mary. He is Professor of Obstetrics and a consultant at Barts Health NHS Trust.

Steve qualified from Southampton University in 1983 and undertook his clinical training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Newcastle upon Tyne where he commenced a research programme into the mechanism of human term and preterm labour. His work has particularly focussed on preventing and treating preterm labour given its major implications for the life and health of baby.

He then worked as an MRC Clinician Scientist in Cambridge until his appointment as Professor at the University of Warwick in 1998. He became Dean at Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in September 2010, before being appointed as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean at the University of Exeter Medical School. He has held a number of positions with NIHR such as specialty lead, clinical director of a regional research network and sits on numerous committees for the Medical Research Council, NIHR, HDR-UK and Royal College.

Steve holds a number of external Board and advisory positions, including Non-Executive Director of Barts Health NHS Trust. He is Chair of UKMed for the Medical Schools Council and General Medical Council, which provides research data on the performance of UK medical students and trainee doctors. He is a Trustee of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
