Driving innovation to reduce heart attacks and strokes

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes a quarter of all UK deaths and drives major health inequalities.

The CVD Academy trains GPs, nurses and pharmacists to lead local projects that prevent heart attacks and strokes.

From November 2023 to September 2024, clinicians across North Central and North East London, and Mid and South Essex have taken part. Their work has reached over 2,700 patients by driving reviews, referrals and treatment for patients with high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The 2025 Academy, launched in January, is focusing on projects such as: lipid management in Black African & Caribbean patients with CKD, statin prescribing for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic patients with Type 2 Diabetes, and physical health checks for patients with severe mental illness who miss routine appointments.

It’s their enthusiasm to just do better. Fantastic to see the multidisciplinary cohort of doctors, nurses and pharmacists as part of the CVD academy bringing to life their commitment to delivering for their patients and practice populations.
