Looking ahead
While we have an established track record in adopting innovation, we have identified a need to support invention and clinical entrepreneurship in our partner NHS organisations. We are at an advanced stage of discussions with our partners and hope to proceed, in the near future, with the development of a significantly enhanced innovation capability that will support the rapid development of solutions created by NHS staff. We believe this can help deliver solutions relevant to our local healthcare systems, support staff morale and engagement and realise income from innovation that can be reinvested in NHS services. We are also looking to develop our capability for ensuring start-ups from our university partners can land their solutions more rapidly in the NHS.
The NHS holds valuable data that could help solve major health challenges, but it is currently spread across different organisations with little consistency in how it is stored, accessed, managed or analysed. Working with OneLondon, UCL, GOSH, UCLH and other research partners across London, we are finding better ways to use this data to drive research and innovation that will improve patient care and outcomes.
In the year ahead we are focusing on improving neighbourhood health by bringing innovative solutions closer to communities, becoming leaders in the piloting and launch of Tirzepatide across primary care, and testing the latest treatment and diagnostic innovations as strategic innovation partners of North Central London Cancer Alliance. We will also be reaching milestones in testing innovations to address pinch points in the Alzheimer’s disease care pathway across London, collaborating with our ICBs and industry.
We believe that innovation is not only critical to the sustainability of healthcare systems but to the health of our people, reducing inequalities, economic growth and wider societal benefit. As such we look forward to this year’s publication of the NHS 10-year Plan alongside a refreshed UK Life Science Strategy. We know that innovation will be central to these plans. We look forward to working on the bold and transformational change to healthcare that the current, challenging context demands, and the public rightly expect.
